Hard to believe another year flew by so quickly. As your kids get older time really does move at the speed of light. My middle daughter is graduating from high school this year so we are in college decisions and party and gift planning mode. It can be a super stressful time for teenagers to make such a big transition. Here are a few ideas for graduation gifts. – I saw this book in a magazine and thought it would be great, click here to order. You could also do Dr. Seuss “Oh the Places You’ll Go” with a special note. – How about a personalized pet pillow so they don’t miss their furry friends as much, buy here. – A pretty tapestry to decorate their dorm, buy here. – A portable phone charger, I’m pretty sure they will all need one of these, buy here. – A Shadow Box bank, buy here. Or make your own, directions here. Add some cash and fun gift cards and they are set. – A basket with handy items for doing laundry (quarters, dryer ball, bleach pen, etc.) – A monthly subscription so they have something to look forward to. There are many to choose from – snacks, a magazine, beauty products, art supplies, candy, etc. – A relaxing Spa Day before they had off to college – A photo book of their life so far. These are super easy to do especially if your pictures are on a site like Shutterfly. You can even include a few of their favorite recipes. Got any great ideas? We’d love to hear...
Graduation season is almost here. This year my daughter is graduating and we are waiting on hearing back from a couple of colleges. So many schools in California are impacted and getting record numbers of applications it makes it really difficult to get in. Cal State Long Beach had over 90,000 applications! We are waiting to hear from Long Beach and one other school before doing final tours and final decisions. Fingers crossed. Whichever school you get into, make the most of your time and do your best and you’ll be fine. We just finished some graduation cards that will be going up on SimplytoImpress.com and PhotoAffections.com and you get the first look at them before they go live. Check them out, hope you like...
For my kids it’s the dreaded last week before school starts back up again. That means we have to try to cram a million things into one week that we’ve wanted to do all summer. I don’t know how it goes so fast! We have a beach boardwalk day planned, the movies, a birthday to celebrate and probably some last minute shopping. I always try to get all of their school supplies before school starts so at least that’s out of the way. I know I will need to go out the first week anyway because there will be some oddball item on a teacher’s list that I didn’t get! To help with your sanity and also to make your kid a superstar at school, why not shop online for personalized school supplies? We have a great selection of school products at Frecklebox.com, everything from binders to lunch boxes all in coordinating patterns. The hardest part for you will be getting your little cutie to pick their favorite. To see all of our patterns click on the Frecklebox link above or to go to these designs specifically, Rainbow Chevron, Cutie Birds and Floral...

Do you have a graduate this year? I do, my youngest is graduating from middle school. I’ve been thinking of lots of fun ideas of what to get her. I may get her a personalized soccer sweatshirt with her team logo on it. Here are a few cool gift ideas I found. Twindom Personalized 3-d figures. These are amazing. If you happen to be near Berkeley I would suggest you get one done. Super cool/unique gift. They also do wedding toppers. They scan your image and make a 3-d figurine for you. Prices start at $39. Custom Stationery. They will need to write lots of thank you notes so why not get them a fun set of stationery with a Starbucks gift card? Personalized Gifts. Put together a fun set of gifts from Frecklebox.com for an elementary or middle school grad. Lots of great choices. Collage Poster. A great way to decorate their dorm if they are going away to college is with a poster that includes family and friends. Personalized Pillow. Most kids going away to college will get a barely comfortable twin mattress, make their life a little more comfy with a custom...

Last Friday, I moved my son to San Diego State for his first year in college and in the dorms. Yes, I’m really old and now really sad! San Diego is pretty far from us, 8 hours, so there probably won’t be too many weekend trips in our future. He’s having a great time so far (week one) but we all miss him – especially the cat, who sits in his room all day wondering when the heck he’ll be back! All in all it was a pretty good trip and move in but I do have some tips that may help for your move in. 1. Pack a cooler with water and snacks. It is a long day and you may not get breaks for food. Also wear shorts and tennis shoes, you get pretty sweaty walking up and down the stairs. 2. Pack Well. Once you unload the car you either have to make several small trips in the elevator or walk the stairs. If you can pack as many things into duffle bags or other easy to carry bags it will go faster. We made the mistake of bringing a suitcase, this was difficult to maneuver up crowded stairs. The line for the elevator was about an hour so we used the stairs. My son was luckily on the 2nd floor, not really a good option if you are on the 11th floor. 3. Don’t forget to pack hangers, drawer locks, hooks, tape for poster hanging and power strips. We forgot these items and had to make a Target run. 4. Essentials – pack deodorant, toothpaste,...
We survived our whirlwind of a week! We had senior ball, graduation, last day of school, a graduation party that we hosted, 2 soccer tournaments and a soccer party. I feel like I need a vacation! Thank goodness school is over. The graduation party was a great success and everyone had a lot of fun. We were a little worried since the set up of the party was during 100 degree heat, but by 6pm it cooled off enough to be comfortable. And by 7:30 the kids had the fire pit going. The party was for my son and niece who both graduated together from High School. My sister and I did most of the planning and set up. To make our lives a little easier, we hired a taco company to do tacos at the party. This eliminated the set up, cooking and cleaning of the main dish. We added chips, salsa and watermelon. We set out big metal buckets with drinks and also had a lemonade dispenser. For easy decorations, we bought mixed flower bouquets and split them up in blue mason jars for the tables. Our main decoration was 5 x 7 photos of the two grads growing up. This continued the theme from the invitation which used a picture of them when they were little. We had approx. 80 prints made and hung them with clothes pins in the yard. The kids thought the “shrine” was a little creepy but the guests loved it and at the end of the evening we let them pick which photos they wanted to take as souvenirs. Even their...
It’s that time of year, when school is winding down, senior ball is over and kids are finishing their finals. Some are moving to the next grade but some like my son are graduating high school. It seems like it was only yesterday that he started kindergarten. I had just had my third child three weeks before school started and I remember dragging all 3 of them to school every morning. The car seats, the strollers, helping in class with a baby bjorn attached to me. Now my son is 6′ 4″ and certainly doesn’t need any help in the classroom. Luckily he’s turned into a really responsible super great kid! He’s off to San Diego State next fall and we are all really proud of the man he’s become. Today we get to celebrate his accomplishments at his high school graduation. There will be inspiring speeches, hot sun, lots of crowds and a whirlwind of picture taking. But I’ll be right there pushing and shoving along with all the other parents to get the best seat in town! Here are a few really great and inspiring graduation speeches: http://youtu.be/UF8uR6Z6KLc&w=450 http://youtu.be/Bpd3raj8xww&w=450 http://youtu.be/ELC_e2QBQMk&w=450 http://youtu.be/0e8ToRVOtRo&w=450...
It’s that time of year when at least someone you know is graduating from elementary school, middle school, high school or college. My son is graduating from high school and Erin’s daughter is graduating from college, I guess we are getting old!! We are throwing a grad party for my son. We are planning on buying him a laptop for school as his gift. Here are some great gifts for grads that won’t break the bank. 1. Cash and gift cards – This gift is always appreciated by grads. They will need gas money if they will be taking their car and gift cards to Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Target, the local grocery store, etc. will be well used. For fun give them a check written out for the year, $200.13. Check Costco for some great gift card options. 2. Gear from the college they are attending. Go online and order them a sweatshirt or t-shirt or get a gift card to the college store. 3. Laundry Gift Basket – Fill it with small size detergents, stain removers and softeners and include a couple of rolls of quarters. 4. Food – Give them a basket filled with granola bars, power bars, instant coffee and other essentials that won’t go bad. That way if they get the midnight munchies they won’t have to hit 7-11. 5. Personalized gifts – A personalized frame, bulletin board, towels, etc. make a great gift. 6. Your Favorite Book – Is there a book you love that you want to share, write a meaningful message inside and include a check. 7. Depending on where the student...
Warning if you are easily offended stop reading now. I rarely re-post stuff from other people or stuff I find on the internet but I had to give it a go this time. You may have already read the rant by the sorority sister but if you haven’t you should check it out. As soon as I read it, I reaffirmed why I never joined a sorority! I know she was fired and all, but this chick can write some funny shit! And it wasn’t just a sentence or two it was a pretty long email. Plus the comments that people are making are pretty damn funny on their own. I know she used foul language and was a total bitch and unfortunately she emailed it so it has gone viral, but you have to admit it would have been fun to write that kind of letter at least once and I’m sure you already are thinking of who would get it. Plus the way she ends it is awesome! I even learned several new swear words. I know we should all be a lot nicer to each other and wish for World Peace but maybe this can start our weekend off with a little laughter. Laughter is the best medicine – at least it’s better than a punch in the face. 😉 Check out the story here make sure to read the comments after her letter! “If you just opened this like I told you to, tie yourself down to whatever chair you’re sitting in, because this email is going to be a rough fucking ride. For those...
It’s almost the end of the school year, time sure flew by! This year I have a graduating senior. Besides figuring out college, senior ball, and graduation parties, I also need to get my act together on his announcement/invitation before it gets too late. My niece is also graduating so we will be doing a joint party for them. We just finished a bunch of new graduation designs for several sites. I love that it is so easy to personalize cards now. Add a great photo and some personal copy and you’re done. You can find cards in school colors, elegant designs, funky designs, whatever you are looking for. Here are a few of our cards and you can find a lot more at SimplytoImpress.com and Invitationbox.com. You can click on the images below to take you to these specific cards. It’s graduation time and I don’t care who you are, you know someone who is graduating from high school, college, kindergarten, or middle school. I’m lucky enough to have a kid graduating from high school on the very same day that I have another kid graduating from middle school. Just kill me. Needless to say, there will be lots of celebration and fanfare. Here are some ideas for grad gifts: • Cash is always good for older kids, but a check tucked into a sweatshirt from their new college is even better. Kids love to wear their emblems. • A gas card is a nice alternative to cash for high school grads, keeps them from spending all their college money on Natty Light and Red Solo Cups. • Personalized stuff: a phone cover with a photo of the kid with BFFs from Zazzle, personalized school supplies (for the younger set) from Frecklebox.com, monogrammed fleece or towels. • Emergency kit: sewing stuff, basic tools, first aid supplies and candy. • A gift card from their college bookstore. Stay tuned for grad party...
Graduation is just around the corner and now is the time to plan your grads announcements and party invitations. Whether your son or daughter is graduating from elementary school, middle school or high school, an announcement is the perfect way to spread the happy news. There are so many choices in cards these days. I love adding photos and if you pick a card with multiple photos you can do a current photo with a baby photo, cute idea! You can also find cards that match your school colors or even your party decor. This Hawaiian themed invitation from SimplytoImpress.com comes both with and without photo options (also in boy/girl versions). The Luau is always a popular party theme. And every party store carries plenty of luau party supplies year round. I love the classic black and white look and the invitation below, found here, is perfect for a more formal look. Add your son or daughters baby picture or even a sports picture, to jazz it up. School colors are always a great option. Blue and gold are very popular. The invitation below from Invitationbox.com comes in a variety of colors. Finding the card is pretty easy just make sure to do it in enough time so you are not rushing around the week before. Start ordering now and enjoy a stress free and exciting day with your graduate. Here are some previous post we did on the subject that you might find useful, Photo Books and Extended Senior...
So if you told me twenty years ago that I’d be getting a matching tattoo with my daughter someday, I’d have thought you were a Crackhead (or whatever we called people back then). If you had told me this five years ago when she was 14 and already planning her first tattoo, I would have said, “maybe if I’m desperate to keep her from doing something more obnoxious.” Right after she turned 18 she “surprised” us (i.e., didn’t tell us) and got the tattoo she’d been wanting for so long. I wasn’t really surprised but a smaller, more obscure design would have been nice. Last year, on Feb. 6, 2010 to be precise, she started planning the next design and I (stupidly) said if she waited a year, I would go with her and we could get one together. Sometimes my parenting decisions are so colossally idiotic that I think my children would be better off if they were raised by wolves. Or the guys from Role Models. I have known my daughter for a long time, I should know that she is the most persistent person I’ve ever met and she only forgets about things like cleaning her shithole room. On Feb. 6, 2011 I got the phone call from college, happily reminding me that it’s been exactly a year and if she came home for the weekend could we go get our tattoos? I’m not anti-tattoo, this is not my first and I was actually kind of excited about the idea. Except for the pain. It’s right up there with childbirth only there’s no cute baby that...
So I was in one of my tasmanian devil style housecleaning frenzies, the kind where I just want to throw out anything that has not been useful to me in the last week. While frantically forming “crap piles,” i.e., crap to toss, crap to take to Goodwill and crap to find a place for, I came across a standing jewelry case in my daughter’s room that we’ve had around since whitewashed oak was in fashion. I was deciding which pile to put it in when my daughter said that she needed a place to put her jewelry. Duh. A couple hours and about $5 worth of paint later, we had a seriously sassy focal point for her room and it’s finally full of jewelry. You almost can’t go wrong painting something black with white trim, but it would have been equally fantastic if we had mixed fun colors. Not everything that sucks can be cured with a paint brush, but it’s worth a...
Remember your very first apartment? It was the place you could call your own and enjoy your independence (which is just another way of saying that you could fill your fridge with beer and your parents wouldn’t know about it). Decorating an apartment is easier than ever with finds from Ikea and Target. We moved our daughter into her first place (yes, there is already beer and a bag, yes a bag of wine in the fridge), she inherited the obsessive designer gene and her roommate’s mom works at Pottery Barn so naturally there was a 48 hour decorating frenzy. The girls already had hand me down couches, black tables and red accents. We found the bold lampshades at TJ Max on clearance, got some throw pillows and the zebra print from ikea and voila, the room came together. Small accents like a runner on the coffee table, the tray with clearance sale vases and a large plant transformed the space from an average apartment (with walls the color of baby shit, seriously) into a very cool place to hang out. My new favorite decorating tool is wall vinyl. You can find it at Target and Orchard Supply. It is inexpensive and removable so at the end of the lease you can take it down and get your full deposit back. It comes in tons of colors and patterns, we stuck with black to continue the color scheme. We used it in the dining area, the hallway and the bedroom. Starting with a color scheme is the easiest way to get a decorator look without a big budget or...
I went to an Office Max store in LA this week to visit our back to school supplies because I just can’t get over how exciting it is to see our products on a shelf. I brought my daughter and her friends cuz they are also easily excited…. Turns out our designs aren’t just for tweens, the college girls loved them too. Kylie, Katie and Kaitlyn thought since Simon+Kabuki had the cutest designs, the display should really be dedicated solely to our Wild Child line. Wild Child school supplies at Office...
