I’m heading off to Huntington Beach for a fun beach vacation but before I head out I wanted to show you a sneak peek of some fun calendars we recently designed. They should be live in August at Checks in the Mail. I’ll post a link when they are. I also wanted to give a big shout out to our Women’s National Team that just won the Women’s World Cup in Canada. If you didn’t watch the game check out these goal highlights, they’re pretty amazing! Also let’s try to chill on all of the anti-women comments. Women playing sports and being good at them will not end the world or men’s sports. We can both be good at it and people can enjoy watching...

Every year Pantone chooses it’s color of the year. This year the color Marsala was chosen. Here is how Pantone describes Marsala, “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.” I’m not sure about all of that but I do know that it is a major transition from the colors over the past few years which were brighter, happier colors. Are we seeing a trend back towards earthier colors over the next few years? Is Avocado Green next? 🙂 Pantone also has some really fun gifts that any designer on your list will drool over! Check them out...
I had this really cool pillow that I loved but after a couple of years the burlap backing was tattered and torn so I decided to re-purpose it. I bought a decorative chipboard shape at Hobby Lobby a while ago. At the time I just thought it was cool and that it would come in handy some day. I was originally thinking to mount a watercolor photo on it and I may need to go back and get another one for that project but in the meantime it worked great for this project. Let’s get Started You will need Mod Podge, a sponge applicator or brush, an old credit card and any surface for mounting. You could use old barn wood, maybe glass, cork – just use your imagination! I figured out approximately where I wanted the bird to be and then cut down my fabric to be just slightly larger. Apply a generous amount of mod podge and apply fabric. Use your credit card to smooth out any bubbles. I then used mod podge on the sides and attached the fabric there as well. You could cut it out to be the exact shape and finish with a ribbon trim or paint also. These would make great Christmas gifts and easy enough for your kids to do for their friends. You could also buy pre-made cork squares and cover those for a cute cork board....
I love discovering new stuff. These are a few of my new favorites. Have you heard of or tried the app Waterlogue? It’s not a free app, it’s $2.99, but so worth it. It turns your ordinary photos into beautiful watercolors. I love the results and these would look beautiful printed on watercolor paper and framed. Here are a few examples from my photo library (before and afters), aren’t they dreamy? I also just discovered a super cool new font collection, Harman. The collection can be bought from Creative Market, which in itself is a super cool site. The collection comes with several fonts in script, inline, regular and some fun extras. Great fonts for all of our stationery designing! Last, but certainly not least and certainly not a new discovery, DISNEYLAND! Yep, I’m going in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait. It’s my favorite place on earth! What will be new for me is that I am going to go to Disney’s Halloween Party and also taking a day to go to Universal Studios. Plus I have not been to Disney since they opened Cars. Super Excited! Have you been to the party before, any advice? Oh and if my kids are good I might bring them with me....

Stripe 1. a relatively long, narrow band of a different color, appearance, weave, material, or nature from the rest of a surface or thing: the stripes of a zebra. 2. a fabric or material containing such a band or bands. 3. a strip of braid, tape, or the like. Stripes are an easy way to add either a bit of zing to your decorating or wardrobe or a way to add a soft texture. Here are a few great examples of stripes. I love that you can add anything to stripes (florals, polka dots, etc.) and it matches. No guesswork involved. Who would have thought that the lowly line could do so...
Our Rockin’ Robin collection isn’t exactly new, it’s one of the first collections we worked on when we started our licensing career. It’s since been used on many fun products. It seems that birds and the brown, blue and pink combo are here to stay. There is a very funny video from Portlandia about birds on everything, if you have not seen it you must check it out! Click here to watch....
Yesterday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. He would have been 110! We all know what a brilliant writer he was, I think we all have at least one or two of his classics. I’ve always loved Horton hears a Who – the idea that there is a planet on a spec of dust, amazing! It kept me from walking on the grass as a child in fear that I would crush multitudes of tiny unknown planets! As good of a writer as he was, I think people tend to forget what an amazing artist he was. His imaginative artwork is beautiful – I love the colors and playfulness. Plus it makes me smile whenever I look at it! Here are a few of his pieces and I encourage you to check out more of his art and a bit more info about him, click here....
We are working on several new floral collections. Here’s a sneak peek of some bits and pieces. We were going for a vintage lace and floral look on the patterns below. Kind of reminds me of wallpaper in my grandmas house. With the floral above we were thinking we’d mix it with fun sayings and stripes, chevrons and polka dots. I think they’d be perfect for a new card collection. They are still a work in progress. What do you think, any...
I am doing some Spring cleaning on my computer and came across some of our original tabletop designs. These designs have not been picked up yet but I sure hope they do. I love the colors and pattern combos and burlap is still a big trend. And I don’t think we will ever get rid of the bird trend! 🙂...
Each year the folks at Pantone pick a new color that they predict will be the hot color of the year. This year they chose Radian Orchid. Here is Pantone’s description of Radiant Orchid, “Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.” They definitely have a way with words – doesn’t that color sound awesome! Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of purple. I see things in purple either in fashion, home decor or stationery and think it looks pretty but not for me. I guess it’s too flashy for me! But I do love it in the garden! Check out their Pinterest Board for some great ideas. Here’s a few to get you started and some previous Pantone color of the year choices, love the...
Our Eat at Moms dishes were a big hit at stores. And now we’ve been asked to design a new collection along the same lines. We are working on that now and it’s looking pretty sassy! But we are super excited that our Eat at Moms collection is also coming out as a fabric line. Now you can have a super coordinated kitchen! The fabric line should be in stores (Hobby Lobby) in 2014. It’s always fun to see a design collection across multiple products. Check out some of the fabric swatches...
Orange is not just for Halloween. Used in home decor it adds a great pop of happy brightness to any room. It’s easy to update for fall with pillows and rugs or you can add orange into your decor all year round. I love the all white kitchen with the orange hanging lights or the orange front door and the orange barn door! Plus if you keep everything else neutral it’s really easy to switch out colors with the seasons, trends or your latest whims. A super easy update using orange just add some pumpkins to your decor either inside or out. For great inspiration check out Houzz.com, Better Homes and Gardens or...
Another summer over so quickly. It feels like each year they get shorter and shorter! My kids started on Wednesday and they were not happy campers. It comes in lots of fun products for school, like lunch boxes, binders, note books, etc. If you haven’t picked up school supplies yet make your kid’s day with personalized products. For the next two weeks the blog will be mostly quiet because I’m heading off to Oahu! I’m so excited. I have a list a mile long of fun things I want to do, see or eat. I might need to move there to get everything done. In reality, I’ll probably only tick 3-4 things off my list because I really don’t want to spend my vacation in the car when I can be lazing away my days on the beach or in the pool. So far I have hiking to a waterfall, snorkeling, shave ice, a hawaiian plate, the swap meet, Pear Harbor, Diamond Head, kayaking, and much more on the list! I’ll take lots of pictures and I’m already thinking of doing a fun Hawaiian theme collection. Got any great tips or must sees for me? Please pass them...
