huesday: DIY with paint

I’ve been in the DIY mood lately and dig anything that has to do with paint. If feels good to do a project yourself, but I want to see speedy results. I lose patience if a project takes more than 2 days. I live in an Eichler that we’ve furnished with both old and new pieces, so this cabinet was sure to fit in. I got this 1940s cabinet from my Grandma’s house last year and immediately knew what I wanted to do to it. You guessed it — paint. You can find spray paint in so many fun colors that the possibilities are endless! I picked a bright lime green, called my dad for last minute spray painting tips and off I went.     The inside was a bit rusty, but the body of the cabinet was in great shape and didn’t need much attention. I did minor sanding to smooth out a few rough patches and then got to work. I removed the handles so they’d stay their pretty chrome finish, but left the interior hooks in place. The truth is the screws were rusted over on the hooks and it would have taken more strength that I had to remove them. I did a coat of primer on the exterior to ensure a smooth surface. Dry time on spray paint is great, as you only need to wait an hour to do your next coat. It took 2 coats of spray paint (3.5 cans) and she was as good as new! I found cute polka dot shelf liner at Target and she was ready to...

color huesday: don't get pinched

Irish? Not Irish? Hate green? Love green? Forget to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day? Ever try to convince co-workers you are wearing green underwear so you don’t get pinched? You must be careful, apparently St. Patrick’s Day may be the only day you can discuss the color of your underwear with co-workers without getting in trouble, or pinched as the case may be. Here are some creative ways to wear green on March 17th without looking like a leprechaun (unless you want to). A touch of green is all you need or you can accessorize to your hearts content! Here are some ideas to get started. Think earrings, rings, hair clips, pins, glasses, nail polish, hats, belts, purses, umbrellas, bracelets, and even removable tattoos*. Clockwise from bottom left to right: Hot Topic Kiss Me I’m Irish temporary tattoo, jellybug Green Turquoise Hybrid Byzantine Chain, Nordstrom Green Makowski Tote, iLuck Neon Bracelet, Green Nail Polish, Emerald-cut Birthstone Cocktail Ring. *depends on where you work *real tattoos for the...

designer kids: do you live with a tiny dinosaur?

These are the shoes that my kid wants to wear every single day. Seriously, it has been more than a year now and needless to say that I have had to replace them a few times. They are from Weboo Kids and they come in different colors and lots of cute styles. The kid is obsessed with dinosaurs to the point where he wanted to name our dog we just adopted “Dinosaur”. Side note: It could be worse, my daughter named our new cat “Princess Jasmine Lily Queen of Pink Hearts and Diamonds”.  While said cat was hanging from my curtains, I named her “effing cat”. Now that we are getting that very cold California rain (I know, it’s not really winter unless you are buried in 100 feet of snow, but whatever) I searched and searched until I found a pair of rainboots that my little dinosaur would wear. How cute are these from Kidorable? Just enough teeth for my tiny dinosaur. I just had to get the cute beanie...

caffeinated rant

Ahhh, Starbucks. My friend. I always look for you, practically every day. You are easy to find while driving in an unfamiliar strip mall parking lot. You are easy to spot in a busy shopping mall. You are a street corner beacon of hope for the afternoon yawns. Your green and black round logo says “trustworthy”, “stamped with approval”, “high quality”, “special treat”, “friendly”, and “knowledgeable about coffee”. Until now. Behold the new Starbucks logo: Although it has not been released yet, the new Starbucks logo is causing a stir. And not the sweet, pour some sugar in your coffee kind of stir. More of a circling the drain type of stir. My question is, when did Starbucks decide to become a seafood restaurant? Or when did they decide to sell environmentally friendly cleaning supplies made from fresh sea water by a mermaid in Finland? Really, Starbucks? Not so warm and fuzzy here. Sometimes more is more and that is okay. You see, I usually love the minimalist logo. There are plenty of examples of logos that are able to stand on their own sans type without loosing integrity and the companies actually benefited from it such as the Nike swoosh, and McDonald’s famous golden arches M. The Starbucks logo without type feels like something is missing. I feel like I have lost a dear friend. Or I feel like my best friend in second grade moved away to Ohio with no forwarding address. Sorry Starbucks, I am now BFFs with my trusted peanut butter and jelly sandwich. If Starbucks is in fact planning to expand to exotic food...
