Turquoise and Red – Favorite Color Combo

I’ve always been partial to turquoise, it reminds me of the beach. And it always feels fresh and breezy. I’ve seen it a lot with red in everything from invitations to pillows to clothes. Two colors that were meant to be thrown together like peanut butter and chocolate. We’ve done several Home and Christmas collections in these colors but it seems like it is finally hitting its stride. I love the vintage vibe it gives off. Erin must have been reading my mind because when I opened my birthday gifts from her today there was an turquoise scarf and matching watch. What a coincidence, great minds think alike! I know what color I’ll be adding to my house this year. Where to find: Pillow, Shoes, Houses, Cookies, Kitchen, Kitchen...

Happy Friday! Hope you had a fabulous Holiday and got everything you wanted! I got lots of fun goodies and a trip to Hawaii for our whole family from my parents. I know the holidays just passed like three days ago but we’ve already been designing for next years holiday and the year after that. Here are a few new design collections that we’ve been working on. Hope you like...

Elegant Winter Wedding

I love the idea of an Elegant Black and White Wedding. Or black and white with a subtle accent color thrown in. You could wear some sparkly shoes under your wedding dress for a great little surprise. Black and white is perfect for anytime of the year but feels especially appropriate during the winter months. There are tons of resources for ideas, I did a google search for black and white weddings and it came back with 408 million pages! That’s a lot to look at. I suggest starting off at places like the Knot or even Pinterest. And if you are looking for something unique and handmade try Etsy.com, I love the brooch bouquets you can find on Etsy, so clever. Good luck planning your special day! Invitation by Simon+Kabuki on LookLoveSend, Heels, Cake, Bouquet, ...

What's new Wednesday

We are busy preparing some new collections for the Licensing Expo in Vegas next week. Our agent Jewel Branding will have lot’s of fab new stuff so swing by her booth and check it out. One of the fun new collections we are working on is all about shoes. What women doesn’t own a ton of shoes?! How come it took us so long to crank this one out? A girl can always use a new pair of shoes to brighten her day. Once when my husband was helping me pack my shoes to move, he kept asking if all of my black shoes are moving with us or going to Goodwill. He just couldn’t understand why I needed so many shoes that were all the same color. Silly men! We hope you like the little sneak peek of our S+K Shoe collection to see more of our work email us, visit our website or visit Jewel Booth in Las...

the new nuetral – gray

So dreamy… Grey or gray is an achromatic or neutral color. The first recorded use of grey as a color name in the English language was in AD 700. Grey is the British, Canadian, Australian, Irish, New Zealand and South African spelling, although gray remained in common usage in the UK until the second half of the 20th century. Gray is the preferred American spelling, although grey is an accepted variant. Gray became the preferred spelling in American English around 1825. These days I am seeing gray everywhere in home decor. I love it mixed with almost every color. Gray is the new brown, black and taupe! It’s not as warm as brown or taupe but it complements other colors really well. It is not a spotlight color it lets the other colors shine. It can make a room feel really modern, country, shabby chic, romantic or traditional depending on what you pair it with. Plus there are so many shades of gray, from blue grays to warm grays. You can’t go wrong. Not feeling brave enough to try it out yet? Then start collecting your favorite looks on Houzz.com or Pinterest and start off with a small space. How about the bathroom or laundry room? So many great color combinations!...

in the meadow

Even though we are having off and on rain the sun does come out every once in a while to prove that it is Spring around here. I think we were spoiled by having such a mild and warm winter that even the smallest bit of rain makes us cranky! All of my flowers in the backyard are blooming and beautiful and they probably really needed the rain. Our new fabric In the Meadow, reminds me of a bright sunny day. Below are some close ups of the quilt detail. You can get the quilt pattern from Quilting Treasures. We also have a line of checks, through Checks in the Mail, using In the Meadow, super cute. Don’t forget to send us any of your favorite projects using our fabric, we’d love to see...

puppies and kittens

When my son was designing a Valentine’s card for his girlfriend, he used puppy and kitten pictures because as he said “Everyone loves puppies and kittens.” So true. Put a picture of a sad faced puppy on something and it will sell like hot cakes, the same goes for a sweet fuzzy kitten. My kids love looking up YouTube videos of cute or funny animals. So it was a no brainer for Simon+Kabuki to do a Puppies and Kittens collection. And since birds are still hot we threw a tree full of birds into the mix. If you want to see the rest of the coordinating swatches just get in touch with our agent Jewel Branding. My daughters would love school supplies with these...

eye candy

I know you were expecting a picture of David Beckham! Hah! I wish. The eye candy I am referring to are the wonderful ways to use color. There are some great color trends this year and you can easily adapt them to your home decor, clothes and jewelry. I’ve already talked about Pantone’s new color Tangerine Tango but there are plenty of other trends that are sure to be a hit. Blue Skies – The color blue is not going away. Chocolate and blue was a hit for a really long time in home decor. The latest combos have blues mixed with taupe, green, and greys. Giving the overall feel a softer more mature vibe. Great for master bedrooms. Blue is very soothing and these new pairings are super sophisticated. Sunshine – When you need some energy and excitement what better color than yellow to brighten your day. Yellow can be used as a subtle wall color to brighten up a room or use it sparingly but boldly. I love yellow mixed with other strong colors like black or grey. Yellow is warm and nurturing and is bound to bring you good cheer. Grass – The color green is a happy color. I love it when it is used as a pop of vibrant color in an otherwise monochromatic scheme. Green also has a very earthy feeling to it. Reminds us that nature is nearby. Even just adding green plants brings a room to life. Sand – I think there is a theme here! I love all white or off-white. It is so crisp and comfy. It may be...

surf's up!

I know it is winter and in some places there is snow on the ground but here in Northern California old man winter has taken a break. I am totally okay with having 75 degree winter days, no complaints here. It’s fun to hit the parks and beaches and not worry about mud. The dogs can go in and out without tracking mud into the house or car and the kids can play soccer to their hearts delight! In honor of our sunny winter I thought I would show off some of our design collections that are directly inspired but sunny California. And I don’t want to give away our ages but you can tell we grew up in the...

what's new wednesday – tangerine tango

In honor of our new color of the year, Tangerine Tango, I decided to take one of our popular patterns and adapt it using Tangerine Tango. I started with Mediterranean Dreams (click to see the original blue and green pattern) and adjusted the colors. It is amazing what a difference using new colors makes. The original definitely has a Mediterranean feel to it, soft and soothing, but with orange and pink I felt like I was transported to India with the colorful saris and fabric you see there. There are so many options with using this color and how the different color combinations evoke different feelings. It will be fun to experiment with Tangerine Tango this year.        ...

Tangerine Tango – Pantone Color of the Year

The Pantone Color Institute just announced their color of the year and it is Tangerine Tango. Pantone is the global authority on color and the originator of the color matching system that established standards for the use of color in manufacturing and print. That means every time you pick a color it will match in fabric or paint. Pretty cool. Orange has never been a super popular color until lately when people have noticed that it pairs great with most other colors. Add it to gray to give your outfit, design or room a pop of color and a modern feel. It also goes great with colors like navy and even red. Add pinks and you get a tropical vibe. It has a friendly happy tone, an instant pick me up. As designers we have always loved orange and try to add it whenever possible. Now we have the proof that we were right all along! Here are some great ideas from home to fashion. I love an all white kitchen and adding just a pop of color or adding throw pillows with orange accents to brighten a room. Have fun adding some Tangerine Tango to your life this year! For more ideas on adding color check out our Pinterest...

The fun part of my frickin' project

I still need to paint the ceiling in my little home office because I can’t possibly live with the current color (cream). I started to paint it last night with a color I picked out solely because it was called “Burlap” and I had fantasies of burlap floor to ceiling curtains in there. In reality the color should have been called “Peachy Puke.” So I went for my 11th trip to the hardware store and picked a different warm grayish color and went to work on destroying my shoulders, neck and back. I’m almost done with the serious grunt work and I get to do the fun part next. My biggest priority when I design a room (or yard) is how I want to feel when I step into it. I want to feel a little euphoric, ambitious yet relaxed, and like I’m in my own domain when I walk into my little home office. It doesn’t need to impress anyone but me, but I’m a tough customer. Here are some of the ideas I’m perusing (you can click on http://pinterest.com/simonkabuki/home-office-ideas/ to see close ups of these photos). In order to avoid buying furniture that doesn’t fit well, or moving stuff around until the floors are scratched and the freshly painted walls are scuffed, I always draw a scaled version of the room with pieces of furniture I’m considering putting in the room. I do this on my computer but it would be just as easy to do it with cutout pieces of paper. Here’s how the desk I want would fit it in the room: My desk used to...

new quilt patterns

We have several fabrics (In the Meadow, Nesting and Juicy Blossoms) out right now through Quilting Treasures. It is always exciting to see what beautiful projects people make with our fabric. For each line we design, we also design a quilt pattern. Quilting Treasures takes our pattern and makes a quilt for display at the shows they attend. The quilts in person are amazing such great craftsmanship. They usually send the quilt to us so that we can take pictures and admire our pattern work. But alas we must send them back. I really wanted to keep the In the Meadow quilt for my daughter’s room. Would have gone perfect! Next up from Quilting Treasures is our Cuddlebumps line. Cute and colorful creatures perfect for any child’s room. Here are links to our current fabric patterns, you can download them for free. Happy quilting. Juicy Blossoms Nesting In the...

add a pop of color

I just recently joined Pinterest. I know I am way behind but I don’t know how people have time to keep up with all of these new social sites popping up. It is hard enough doing a few blog posts a week, twitter and facebook, plus running Simon+Kabuki and our corporate design company, EandI Design, now I need to add Pinterest and still try to be the greatest mom and wife at home. Yikes that is a shit load to do!! I keep a constant running of lists of what to do today. I am sure at some point my head will just explode and my family will have to make do with my life insurance. Must remember to pay life insurance. Anyhoo… Today I wanted to do a post on adding pops of color to your house and life so that you can make it through the dreary winter and I thought it would be great to test out on Pinterest. Right now in northern California we are suffering with 65-70 degree sunny skies but I know that the rainy days are coming. So instead of shooting yourself when you’ve spent the 5th consecutive day inside just add a pop of green or magenta to brighten the day! I logged onto my Pinterest account and started pinning a board called Pops of Color. Here are the results. I am not quite sure how the whole thing works yet, like how do I share it on my blog? But I am sure if I spend enough countless hours on there it will come to me. If you have any...

it's a wrap

We recently designed personalized wrapping paper, just in time for the holidays. You can add whatever message you’d like, personalize it from Santa or buy a roll with your family name. Add a pretty bow and you are set to go. We designed two sets for Christmas and two sets for boy or girl birthday. You can find the gift wrap at Frecklebox.com. We also have an assortment of other personalized products on their site that would make great holiday gifts. We plan to highlight other gift wrapping ideas in the coming weeks. So be on the...

what's new wednesday – mediterranean dream

We are working on several new art collections for the Atlanta Gift Show in January. We will definitely be showing some new Christmas gift ideas and some exciting new kitchen themed collections. But the collection we are most excited about is Mediterranean Dream. We have been playing with this idea and the color schemes for quite some time and we are really pleased with how it turned out. I love the aqua and lime combo best. So bright and happy. We also did several other color ways and I actually love them all. Sometimes when we are designing we may not be using our favorite colors; for instance I do not like purple but I know that it is a hot color and looks great especially paired with gray, but this collection looks great in all color schemes. I think it would make a great fabric collection and would look beautiful on home gifts like candles or plaques. What do you think? To see more color ways and the full set of patterns for Mediterranean Dream or to get our catalog, please contact our agent Julie Newman, Jewel Branding &...

what's new wednesday – sneak peak

We are almost done with Holiday cards here at Simon+Kabuki. Just doing some last minute additions to fill in some holes on some of the sites that carry our line. One thing that we’ve learned with licensing our artwork is that it is a very long process. Not at all like our corporate graphic design business, EandI Design. Those clients want everything yesterday and we’ve been trained to respond just like Pavlov’s dog. With licensing, we can work on a design in September and not hear whether it’s been chosen until the following May and then it may not hit stores until October or November! But when it does hit the stores we are like kids in a candy shop. It is so exciting and gratifying to see your stuff out there in the public eye. And it is a lot more fun to tell your kids, friends, family, etc. that you can pick up one of our notebooks at Target as opposed to say picking up our latest semi-conductor data sheet, snooze! We are currently working on home office products for a very large manufacturer. They are really great to work with and we can’t wait to see our stuff in the big box stores next year. Staples, Office Max and Office depot will be carrying the new line. I am including a sneak peak of some of the patterns that we are working on. Of course as soon as they hit the stores you will be the first to know.   Congratulations to Anna Driver-Bishop. She was the winner of our Baby Shower kit...

milfy monday – everything's coming up roses

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. – William Shakespeare This weekend my husband and I had a rare hour to kill until my son’s soccer game started. We decided to visit the San Jose Rose Garden. Sometimes you forget that your city has rare gems just waiting to be visited. When we plan our vacations we are always on the lookout for hot spots in other towns but often forget what we have in our own hometown. The San Jose Rose Garden is 5.5 acres with nearly 4,000 roses. It was selected as America’s Best Rose Garden, who knew! It is a beautiful oasis in the middle of San Jose. There are many weddings and graduations held in the garden each year. What a beautiful backdrop – fountains, grass and thousands of roses, can’t be beat! We spent our time wandering through the rows and smelling the various roses. Some have no smell and some have wonderful smells. The upkeep of the garden is done by volunteers and I want to thank them for giving their time for every one to enjoy. I encourage you to grab a blanket and picnic lunch and enjoy the garden on a beautiful sunny day, you will not regret it! It was nice to take a break from our busy lives in such a quiet and aromatic spot. We will definitely be back! What treasures do you have in your hometown?...

the hoe down: My new favorite party theme

I was inspired to have a Country Western themed party for my husband’s birthday because he loves country music and I would able to sport blue jeans and boots instead of a dress (ack) and high heels. Of course my husband wondered if I would be inviting hoes to the Hoe Down. To his disappoint, the answer was “NO. YOU’RE A PIG.” Naturally I had to have a color scheme (red, brown and denim), cowboy food (ribs, chili, jalapeno corn bread, slaw, etc.) and barnyard decor. I gotta say, this is one of less expensive party themes I have taken on. I got daisies and sunflowers from the farmer’s market and used canning jars for vases so my centerpieces were dirt cheap. And haybales for extra seating looked super cute and I didn’t have to rent as many chairs. I always make and decorate my own cakes, it’s really fun and I like for my family to know that I care enough about their birthdays to make it a priority. So I got up at the crack of dawn to decorate this spice cake with cream cheese frosting. A DJ, a keg, a dance floor and a mechanical bull were the final necessities for a kickass Hoe Down. Most of our guests were excited to sport cowboy hats and flannel shirts. They were also very flexible with their drinking habits, I saw more team moms taking tequila shots than I ever could have imagined. Their flexibility was really tested with the mechanical bull though, those of us who were ballsy enough to ride it are covered in bruises and...

decorating with white

I love the look of an all white room. Especially shabby chic and comfy with just a couple of pops of color, if any. This probably won’t happen at my house during my life time. With 3 kids, a husband, 2 dogs and a cat, I’m lucky if I can get the chocolate milk stain out of the carpet. I am not a huge fan of the modern look but cement flooring does have its appeal. This year I replaced both my family room and living room couches. During my younger (more stupid) days, I decided to get light (mostly white) slip covered couches. I thought wow how great I can pop them into the wash whenever they get dirty. Which I didn’t realize would be daily! I finally broke down and got a brown leather couch for the family room and a taupe chenille couch for the living room. I’ve always avoided leather because I don’t think it is quite as comfortable, but I do have to say it was a great choice. It never gets dirty, ever! My only issue is that pillows and throw blankets always slip off. My chenille couch in the living room hides the dirt and dog hair well. As most of my friends and family know, as soon as I win the lottery, I am going all white. I may have to buy the house next door for the rest of my family but my space will be awesome! And there will be a cute victorian playhouse/office in the backyard, no kids allowed! And maybe a fairy garden since the dogs will...

Vintage Baby

Right now I am loving all of the vintage looks that are in home decor. Mixing burlap and lots of white  is beautiful and really brightens the room. Since I always design my kids birthdays around a theme, I thought it would be fun to decorate a baby room in similar fashion, starting with the announcement. There are no babies on the horizon for me but just thinking up decorating projects makes me happy! Make sure to use lots of vintage white frames and soft pastel colors. Keep the bedding simple. A burlap or linen ruffle would look great on the crib. Vintage toys and metal buckets for storage fit in nicely. I also love the look of the tissue paper pom poms hung from the ceiling. what's new wednesday

Simon+Kabuki has some exciting new products that have hit the shelves and the cyberworld. One product that I just love is our new Cuddlebumps coloring book (full disclosure, I did not work on the design!). I used to love to color as a kid and my two girls still enjoy coloring although now it is usually just their menus at restaurants. Maybe I will have a coloring contest this weekend. After they are done with all of their mountains of homework, don’t get me started! We also have some back to school items that are being sold at Meijer. We do not have that store here in California but it sounds a lot like one of my favorite stores, Target. Hopefully we get some samples because I love notebooks and can never have enough lists of things to do going at one time. It feels great at the end of the day to have crossed off everything on my list, and if I didn’t get to it that day, I just turn the page and start with a new list. Makes me feel good tricking myself like that! At some point I may need to check out my “list” neurosis but for now it is just one of my cute tics and I get a shitload of stuff done that way. My daughters can’t wait to get their hands on the Peace Out folders. Anything with hearts and peace symbols is a hit with the kids.  ...

huesday: ombre wedding cakes

A new trend in wedding cakes is ombre, which is a French term meaning “shaded”. Fashion designers have been producing ombre fabric for years and the trend has now crossed over into cake design. I’m currently in love with this idea and am considering making a mini version just to see how it comes out. I’m also considering a vow renewal (can you do that at 16 years of marriage?) just to have one of these while they’re still popular! The ombre look is simple yet so stunning. Imagine one of these beauties gracing your wedding.                   Cake credits: Yellow cake found at Style Me Pretty Pink cake found at Inspiration Wed Pink interior cake found at Call Me Cupcake Purple cake found at Maggie Austin Cake Turquoise cake found at Bobbette &...
