Quick Halloween Costume Ideas

Every year my girls jump from one costume idea to the next until a few days before Halloween, while my son usually throws it together the day before. Here are a few ideas to get you started just in case the princess costume is unavailable! They can all be thrown together with items you have on hand or a quick trip to Goodwill or the Halloween store. 1. Scooby and the gang. This is great for a family of 5 or 5 friends. We did this one year and found all of the clothing except Scooby at Goodwill. 2. Cruella Deville and Dalmations – My daughter’s soccer team dressed as this for a tournament. They won best costume. White shirts with black fabric paint, facepaint and pigtail ears. 3. Life Guards – If you can’t find a red lifeguard shirt just buy iron on letters at Michaels. Add a blow up tube around your waist. 4. Sugar Skull (I found this great tutorial by Jessica Harlow). You can also check Pinterest for lots of other ideas and color schemes. Pair with all black clothing or get colorful either way works. 5. Wind-up Doll – Use a toilet paper roll and some cardboard to make the wind up key. Any fancy dress will do, just attach the wind up key to their back. 6. High Tech T-Shirt (perfect for a teen) You must watch the video, it was started by an ex-Nasa scientist! Click on the title to see lots of other options all using a smartphone and apps. 7. Energizer Bunny – Just wear all pink, add pink ears,...

happy halloween – best pumpkin carvings

Ray Villafane There are some amazing pumpkin carvings out there and I thought in honor of Halloween I would share some great ones. I came across the artist Ray Villafane during my search. Wow! You can see his pumpkins here also. Quite amazing, it is too bad they rot after a few days. There are plenty of other great designs out there. It seems like Martha Stewart got us started on this trend of sculptural pumpkins. We all used to do the traditional jack-o-lantern face but now anything goes. Here are some of Martha’s creations that I thought were great. Being a designer, I love the use of type and unusual subject matter, at least unusual for a pumpkin anyway! Next we just have to figure out what we can carve for...

rocktober: what i love about this month

I’m a native California girl and I live for Summer. I can’t wait for it to arrive, and I’m depressed when it ends. I realize I sound like a whiny-ass, but it’s not my fault and it’s not fair that we can’t have sunshine and 78 degrees all year. Once I get past the short term depression, the feeling that I woke up looking older, the killer constriction of closed-toed shoes, and dining indoors (yeah, it takes awhile) I get excited about things that only seem right in October. Hello, Comfort Food. Oh how I’ve missed you. I love a good salad but nothing is better than Mac & Cheese. I don’t care if it’s gourmet with gruyere and crunchy stuff on top or right out of the Kraft Mac n Cheese box. It’s all good. Stew is another big favorite for my family, it simmers all day while we’re at work and my whole house smells awesome when I get home. I also dive into an uncontrolled baking frenzy as soon as the temperature drops. I’ll be baking coffee cake and chocolate chip cookies this week. If I can’t be in my garden, I’ll just be in my kitchen. Check out some great Mac and Cheese recipes from Martha Stewart. Also these stew recipes sound delicious, Williams-Sonoma. The pork and pumpkin stew seems particularly fitting for October. I realize I recently bitched about closed toed shoes, but who doesn’t love her boots? My nickname was “Boots” when I was a kid because I only wanted to wear my white, lace up patent leather boots. All the time. Even...
