S+K Back to School

Today was the first day back to school for my kiddies and they were not happy. This summer flew by and I feel like we did nothing. It does make me envy home schooled kids! I am hoping to go to Disneyland during our October break so that is something to look forward to! I hope you got to see our back to school products on Good Morning America, if not check out our Monday post for the video. While cleaning our office out, I ran across our very first licensed school supplies. Aren’t they fun?! I actually love the Rockin’ Princess set but unfortunately it did not get picked up yet. Maybe it will, I think it’s really cute. These were sold in stores like Staples and Office Max. There were binders, folders, notebooks and pencil cases. I love the pencil...

Back to School with Simon+Kabuki

I must admit that I love when my kids are on summer break and totally dread the first day of school. The summer flies by and there is never enough time to do everything we want to plus work and take care of house duties! I always say we’ll hit the beach once a week or go to the park or hike but something always gets in the way. We have gone to beautiful Lake Tahoe and Santa Cruz and we are going to San Luis Obispo for a weekend soccer tournament so we have been doing some things, I just wish summer was longer! We also have to start stocking up on school supplies. Every teacher gives their list and we all head off to Target or the office supply store. I love getting them some fun and funky school supplies to start their year on the right track. We designed several Back to School Collections. Here are a couple of new ones. Check Frecklebox.com for sales on back to school and the rest of our collections. Too Cool for School Collection can be found here and The Prep collection can be found here....

Easy Photo Craft Project

Last summer after getting back from Hawaii I had one of our family photos transferred to wood by a company called Woodpix. It turned out really cute and I thought it would be fun to experiment on my own a bit with transferring photos to wood. It is a really easy process and a fun project for kids. My kids were thinking of gift ideas for friends and fun ways to decorate their room. We used black and white images and a piece of wood I bought from Michaels for our first attemp. Next time I will also try out color images and different types of wood blocks maybe even colored wood to see what we come up with. What you will need: A photo printed from your laser jet printer, Mod Podge, foam brush, wood, a credit card for smoothing bubbles and a rag Step 1 – Paint a layer of Mod Podge onto your board. You can also use gel medium instead of Mod Podge. I used Mod Podge. Step 2 – Carefully lay your photo onto the wood and use the credit card to smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles. Step 3 – Let dry overnight or at least several hours. Step 4 – Lay a wet rag over entire board to get the paper wet (it does not need to be soaking wet). Use the rag to scrub off the paper. Step 5 – Once all of the paper is off, let the wood dry a bit and then follow up with another layer of Mod Podge to protect the image. Voila you are...

The Magical art of Dr. Seuss

Yesterday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. He would have been 110! We all know what a brilliant writer he was, I think we all have at least one or two of his classics. I’ve always loved Horton hears a Who – the idea that there is a planet on a spec of dust, amazing! It kept me from walking on the grass as a child in fear that I would crush multitudes of tiny unknown planets! As good of a writer as he was, I think people tend to forget what an amazing artist he was. His imaginative artwork is beautiful – I love the colors and playfulness. Plus it makes me smile whenever I look at it! Here are a few of his pieces and I encourage you to check out more of his art and a bit more info about him, click here....

Gluten, Nut and Dairy Free Microwave Granola

My daughter loves granola either eaten with soy milk, topping ice cream and even mixed into fruit shakes. It can be hard to find a granola that is free of all of her allergens so I tried making some at home in a small batch this weekend. It was pretty easy and she loved. This way I know she can eat it safely and I save about $5 for a small bag! The other fun thing about this recipe is all of the things you can add to make it exactly how you like it. Ingredients 1 cup Gluten Free Oats 1 T Oil (or dairy free butter or coconut oil) 2 T Honey (or maple syrup or agave) 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon (if desired) 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract or other flavoring Mix-Ins (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, cranberries, raisins, shredded coconut, chocolate chips, etc.) Instructions Mix oats, cinnamon and seeds in a microwavable container.  Microwave oil, honey and extract for 30 seconds and mix to combine, pour over oat mixture and stir. Microwave for one minute, stir. Return to microwave for another minute, stir. Microwave for thirty seconds, stir. All microwaves are different so you may not need as much cooking time. Let granola cool before adding fruit or chocolate. Alternately, you could put the mixture on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees, check often to make sure it does not burn (cook for approx. 10 minutes). Store in a covered container and...
