Celebrate National Letter Writing Month!

Celebrate National Letter Writing Month!

Did you know there was an entire month devoted to letter writing? Me neither! It’s an annual effort to promote literacy and celebrate the art of letter writing. Letter writing is a way of preserving history. We all know that everyone has a stash of special letters saved. I still look at all of my notes/letters passed during high school and college. I love getting letters and packages from people it is so fun. I know we can all send email thank yous and party invites but isn’t getting something in the mail so much more meaningful? I always have my kids send thank yous after Christmas or their birthdays. It’s fun to add in pictures or drawings as well. I know my parents love getting hand written notes from their grandkids, they keep them on the frig for all to see. How we got into Licensing our Artwork

We often get asked how we got into licensing our artwork. About 8 or 9 years ago a new company came to us and asked if we would design some stationery for their site that they would proof online and print digitally, a new concept. We were corporate graphic designers so we were used to designing and printing digitally and working pretty fast. We had always designed fun holiday gifts for clients and family/friends and had even thought about opening our own stationery store. We went as far as testing and printing some designs and getting prices for everything. We still have some of the stuff in storage (need to have a garage sale!). The timing was perfect and we gave it a try. We never imagined we could make a living doing it, we were doing it more for fun. That online stationery company was TinyPrints and the rest is history. From TinyPrints we expanded to other sites like InvitationBox.com and KodakGallery. With Kodak, we were their most successful designer outselling Martha Stewart! From there it was only natural that we expand our designs to other products. We found an awesome agent, Jewel Branding and began marketing to manufacturers. We had a booth at Surtex, the licensing show in New York, and go each year. It is a lot of work and design time but our product line is growing each year. It is exciting to see our stuff at stores and online. It is a long process before you are profitable and it takes many years to build up repeat customers but the sky’s the limit for...

The Hand Written Thank You

Have you seen the movie The Jerk? There is one scene in the movie where Steve Martin is super excited about getting the new phone book, see it here. This is how I feel when I am getting the mail. Since I am a stationery designer, I’ve always done personalized thank yous either with photos, cute illustrations or just great type. It is so easy to do now, just upload a photo or pick a design you like and add your name or monogram, so no more excuses! Your recipient will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Plus a set of personal thank you notes makes a great gift. Know any high school seniors graduating this year? They will get plenty of gifts, why not give them a set of personalized thank you cards along with a gas card?
