Cute Totes for Spring

It’s pouring rain as I write this post, but I’m already feeling like it’s time for Spring. I think this year is going to be The Year of The Tote for me. I’m going to collect totes the way I collect sunglasses and shoes (okay, maybe not shoes-I don’t think there are enough tote bags available for that) and use them as an accessory. This sassy bag was made for me by a fabulous seamstress. Karen makes totes for her granddaughters out of super modern fabric collections, I saw one of her creations and I was jealous and whiny so she made me one too. Just goes to show you that acting like a toddler is pretty effective. But if you’re like me and you do better with power drill than a sewing machine, there are lots of options in every price range. So if you see me at the gym, the beach, the grocery store or the office, check out my tote-ally awesome...

Tangerine Tango – Pantone Color of the Year

The Pantone Color Institute just announced their color of the year and it is Tangerine Tango. Pantone is the global authority on color and the originator of the color matching system that established standards for the use of color in manufacturing and print. That means every time you pick a color it will match in fabric or paint. Pretty cool. Orange has never been a super popular color until lately when people have noticed that it pairs great with most other colors. Add it to gray to give your outfit, design or room a pop of color and a modern feel. It also goes great with colors like navy and even red. Add pinks and you get a tropical vibe. It has a friendly happy tone, an instant pick me up. As designers we have always loved orange and try to add it whenever possible. Now we have the proof that we were right all along! Here are some great ideas from home to fashion. I love an all white kitchen and adding just a pop of color or adding throw pillows with orange accents to brighten a room. Have fun adding some Tangerine Tango to your life this year! For more ideas on adding color check out our Pinterest...

color huesday: gray and orange

The middle of winter is when some of us start wishing for spring. Gray skies are not usually associated with warm bright feelings. I know, being a California girl means I can’t complain about my 50 degree day when some people in the country are experiencing a snowmageddon of epic proportions. So, to cure the winter doldrums, I say bring on the cool (pun intended) trend of pairing gray with pops of bright orange. The combination of gray alongside a juicy orange bring a modern and sophisticated feel to weddings, fashion, and home decor. This is my new favorite happy combo, it reminds me of the first spring flowers that emerge in the still cool weather. I can’t wait for spring, but for now this palette brings the perfect amount of “happy” to winter. the color of summer

Before I go crazy about Summer (which I LOVE), I have to give a shout out to the organizers of the HOW Design Conference and all the kickass women who attended my session called “Women on Top.” I know you’re thinking “Seriously? They let her talk about sex at a design conference? So does that make it Designer Sex?” The conference was inspiring as usual, with the coolest attendees ever (as opposed to attendees at an accounting conference). I had a great time and met some great women, so big round of applause to all the peeps who put on the show. So, what’s not to love about Summer? There’s beach days, no school, dinner out on the patio and enjoying the garden. There’s also that little bit of a tan that makes me feel 5 years younger and 5 pounds lighter and the long walks after dinner. I haven’t actually gone on a long walk after dinner yet, but it’s on my list. For us creative types, Summer means new colors and a sunnier outlook on design. I’ve been really feeling the yellow tones lately (wonder why) and I’m loving all of the turquoise I’m seeing. But if I could assign one color to the summer season, it would have to be orange. It’s bright and juicy and totally happy. I was shopping for plants and flowers for my ongoing landscape design project and I kept going back to the orange options, and I’ve also been buying orange juice (which is only interesting because my kids don’t like it and I don’t buy it the rest of the...

Gotta Love Spring Colors

I just could not be happier about the arrival of sunshine and blossoms in the Bay Area. It makes me want to play outside until dark and cook dinner on the barbeque. And the colors of Spring give me energy in a way that not even a Venti Caramel Macchiato can. If I wasn’t a graphic designer I think I could be a landscape designer. Everywhere I go these days I am overwhelmed with beautiful colors and textures of foliage. I’ve been working hard on my own yard, trying to learn more about plants and how to design a garden. Some of the sites that I find helpful are www.weekendgardener.net and www.hgtv.com (go to landscaping). Even if you don’t have a big yard, an artfully arrange potted plant can make a beautiful welcome on your front porch or small patio. I am working with contrasting colors and textures in my yard right now. I’m really feeling orange and blue this year, I’ll put the blue low-growing flowers in front so they don’t disappear with the taller brighter juicy orange flowers closer to the house. I’m also loving the grassy plants, which are easy to grow and maintain and add a soft texture. They come in tons of colors and sizes and I think I have planted almost every variety in the last month. Spring inspires more than the amateur gardener, everywhere I shop these days (and I am an excellent shopper) I’m seeing gorgeous jewel tones and my favorites, the pastels. Floral prints mixed with plaids and checks is really hot right now and Magenta is the color of...
