Sudden impact – 2 day yard makeover

My husband has accused me of cheating on him… with our yards. He says I spend all kinds of time lavishing them with attention and I get all excited when presented with a fresh bloom. In another life I will be a landscape designer. There are a lot of similarities to graphic design but with an added layer of complexity. You have to consider seasons, growth and whether the damn dog will tear it up. A friend of mine was recently visiting from Southern California and asked if I would come down and help re-design his yard. Before you start thinking, “oh sure he wanted you to come and work on his… yard,” I’d like to clarify that Peleg is my gay boyfriend so of course everything about this project was super fun and totally fabulous. I do not cheat on my husband with other people’s yards. Just ours. I asked Peleg to send me the dimensions of all of the planters, get everything cleaned out. No weeds, rocks, old roots etc. and have a drip system installed before I arrived so that we could get it all done in two days. I also sent a list of questions about how he intended to use the space and how it should feel when he walked outside. Then I gave him the task of going for a walk in his hood and taking pictures of plants that he liked. This is a great way to figure out what will grow successfully in your own yard. We found plants in varying heights, textures and colors. When you’re doing a planter, you...

Gluten Free Potstickers

Potstickers are super yummy! When I’m at Costco I usually pick up a bag of their potstickers to keep in the freezer. Yesterday I decided to make my own and make them gluten free for my daughter. Making them from scratch is a lot of work, so make sure you have a couple of hours to devote to this yummy recipe. Mine may not be the prettiest pot stickers in town but they tasted good. And since it was my first attempt we’ll call it a success! Dough 1 cup white rice flour or sweet rice flour 3/4 cup tapioca flour pinch of salt 2 tablespoons oil 2/3 cup boiled water (adjust if necessary) Filling 1 lb. ground pork 4 cups chopped cabbage (I used pre-packaged cabbage for cole slaw) 1 teaspoon ground ginger 2 tablespoons minced garlic 3 tablespoons gluten-free soy sauce Combine filling ingredients and set aside. Combine flours, salt and oil, add boiling water and mix to form a dough. Dust a cutting board with rice flour and roll out dough, not too thin. I used a mason jar lid to cut circles. Fill with pork and crimp closed either by hand or you can use a fork. You can also use a tortilla press if you have one to make perfect wrappers. Add 2 tablespoons of oil to a pre-heated pan and add potstickers. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side, then add a 1/2 cup of water and cover and let steam for 4-6 minutes. I like to take the cover off and cook them a little longer so they have a slight crunch to...

Comfy Guest Room

My daughter went away to college and when she didn’t move back home after the first year my sons went on a campaign to put a pool table in her room. So we did. After 4 years away, she came back home for a few months until she could afford her own place. Since her old bedroom is now the Pool Room, she moved into our guest room. With her effin’ cat. Who tore up the carpet trying to escape. This is how a lot of my home projects start, with one repair that snowballs into a total makeover. I figured if I have to replace the carpet, I might as well paint while the room is empty. And now that I’m painting a new color I’ll have to get new bedding. And since I’m starting over, I might want to rearrange the furniture because I haven’t hurt my back lately. The afternoon sun shines on the bed so this room might have to double as the Afternoon Nap Room. Now I just have to redo the attached bathroom, stay tuned!  ...

Shady Veggie Gardening

I have two spots in my yard that I plant veggies. A really sunny spot where I have one raised bed (pictured above from last summer). Last year I grew tomatoes, swiss chard, eggplant, basil and lettuce with great success. This time around I will plant tomatoes, basil and probably swiss chard again. My other larger area is two large raised beds in partial shade (pictured below). I’ve had some success with broccoli and cauliflower but other veggies that I’ve planted wanted full sun. This year I did some research on shade tolerant plants and I’m going to try kale, spinach, lettuce and strawberries for sure, not sure what else. I think I will also mix in some shade tolerant flowers and plants. Here’s a good list or this one for some shade tolerant veggies. Now if I can just figure a way to keep my annoying dogs out of the garden area everything would be peachy! Got any...

Setting up a Home Office

We’ve decided that when our lease is up at the end of the summer, that we will move our office to our homes. Erin and I live within a mile of one another so getting together for meetings and brainstorming will be easy. Most of our corporate clients no longer come to our office. We either go to them or everything is done by email. Our licensing manufacturers are all over the country and world so we get together with them only occasionally at trade shows. It’s a changing world we live in. One of my problems with moving my office to my house is that I won’t have a dedicated room just for my office. I will need to have a multi-tasking area, like the corner of my bedroom or my living room. It will be a big adjustment but will also save us some money (rent, insurance, phone bills, etc.). I’ve just started thinking about some space ideas and also getting to the difficult task of cleaning out an office that has accumulated 20 years worth of stuff! Here are some ideas that I really like. I’ll keep you posted with before and after pics when I finally get around to making changes at home. And check out my Pinterest board for my...

The Magical art of Dr. Seuss

Yesterday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. He would have been 110! We all know what a brilliant writer he was, I think we all have at least one or two of his classics. I’ve always loved Horton hears a Who – the idea that there is a planet on a spec of dust, amazing! It kept me from walking on the grass as a child in fear that I would crush multitudes of tiny unknown planets! As good of a writer as he was, I think people tend to forget what an amazing artist he was. His imaginative artwork is beautiful – I love the colors and playfulness. Plus it makes me smile whenever I look at it! Here are a few of his pieces and I encourage you to check out more of his art and a bit more info about him, click here....

Saddle Up Fabric Inspires some stitchin’ and bitchin’ cowgirls!

I’m so inspired by cool home decor sewing projects but most of them cannot be created with a screwdriver or nail gun… I’m really gonna have to take a sewing class this summer. This is a super sassy wall covering quilted by one of my mom’s lifelong BFFs. She gets together with a bunch of other quilting divas and they do group projects. I’m guessing they drink and cuss while they’re at it. Click here for Quilting Treasures or here and here to purchase fabric.  ...

Gluten, Nut and Dairy Free Microwave Granola

My daughter loves granola either eaten with soy milk, topping ice cream and even mixed into fruit shakes. It can be hard to find a granola that is free of all of her allergens so I tried making some at home in a small batch this weekend. It was pretty easy and she loved. This way I know she can eat it safely and I save about $5 for a small bag! The other fun thing about this recipe is all of the things you can add to make it exactly how you like it. Ingredients 1 cup Gluten Free Oats 1 T Oil (or dairy free butter or coconut oil) 2 T Honey (or maple syrup or agave) 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon (if desired) 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract or other flavoring Mix-Ins (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, cranberries, raisins, shredded coconut, chocolate chips, etc.) Instructions Mix oats, cinnamon and seeds in a microwavable container.  Microwave oil, honey and extract for 30 seconds and mix to combine, pour over oat mixture and stir. Microwave for one minute, stir. Return to microwave for another minute, stir. Microwave for thirty seconds, stir. All microwaves are different so you may not need as much cooking time. Let granola cool before adding fruit or chocolate. Alternately, you could put the mixture on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees, check often to make sure it does not burn (cook for approx. 10 minutes). Store in a covered container and...

New Children’s Bedding Collections

One of Simon+Kabuki’s goals this year is to do a line of bedding. We’ve been working on some fun kids bedding collections that we hope get picked up soon. Here is a sneak peek of a couple that we’ve recently done. We also designed accessories, like lamps and rugs, and wall art to go along with each collection. We thought these would be perfect at Land of Nod or The Company Store, what do you think?...

A New Year, A New Calendar

It’s 2014, wow that flew by fast. I think as we get older the years go by quicker. My kids seem like they were babies just last week. I usually don’t make New Year’s resolutions, not because I don’t have any goals, but I think you should always try to be a better person and have goals to achieve. One thing I would like to see is for people to be nicer to each other. Have you read some of the comments people leave on websites? It makes me really sad to know that there are that many people who feel the need to spout hate for no reason at all. Can we eliminate the comments sections? Why should we comment on every article we read anyway? I digress! To start the New Year off organized, everyone needs a new calendar. Whether you use a white board calendar (that’s my choice), a hanging paper calendar or something else, here are a few fun ones. Click on the image to link to the various purchase pages. Enjoy!...
