Cute Totes for Spring

It’s pouring rain as I write this post, but I’m already feeling like it’s time for Spring. I think this year is going to be The Year of The Tote for me. I’m going to collect totes the way I collect sunglasses and shoes (okay, maybe not shoes-I don’t think there are enough tote bags available for that) and use them as an accessory. This sassy bag was made for me by a fabulous seamstress. Karen makes totes for her granddaughters out of super modern fabric collections, I saw one of her creations and I was jealous and whiny so she made me one too. Just goes to show you that acting like a toddler is pretty effective. But if you’re like me and you do better with power drill than a sewing machine, there are lots of options in every price range. So if you see me at the gym, the beach, the grocery store or the office, check out my tote-ally awesome...

designer kids: cotton candy

My daughter wanted a canopy bed (who doesn’t?) Kids grow up and the twin beds just don’t cut it any more. I was lucky enough to have a friend (Erin) who’s daughter was leaving for college and they needed a new home for this cute canopy bed. Sure we’ll take it! It was just in time, the small twin bed was going to collapse any moment from the weight of her thousands of stuffed animals (sorry mom, I now get the whole too many stuffed toys thing). We collected the bed and two months later we finally had time to set it up (we have no time management skills). She wanted pink and butterflies and I will milk this stage as long as possible as long as I don’t have to repaint her room any time soon. I took the pillow sham to Home Depot with me to match the shades of pink bedding. I hung pink sheer window panels from the canopy. If you look close, there are tiny sequins on the panels which look really cool at night. I found a cute peace sign pillow, and my daughter picked out the wall decals and butterflies. My favorite thing are the butterflies which are so easy to hang and you can move them around. The room feels like cotton candy to me. If I was my daughter’s age, I would want a room just like this. Sheer panels, lamp, wall decals from Target. Bedding and nightstand from Pottery Barn Kids (my favorite store). Peace sign pillow from Justice....

color huesday: think pink

The PANTONE color of the year is Honeysuckle and I can’t be happier. Aside from being a happy color, it is saving me from having to re-paint my daughters room. I told her that her pink walls at least had to stay all the way through 2011 being the color of the year and all. PANTONE describes it as “Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year.” (Yeah, lets not get too carried away description people.) Bring on the pink! Look for Honeysuckle pink popping up everywhere in weddings, home decor, fashion, and cosmetics. This color flatters every skin tone when worn by both men and women. If you are planning a wedding, it could not be a better time to try this super excellent tool for color matching. I wish there was one of these when I was searching for the perfect color for my bridesmaids dresses back in the day. Now excuse me while I go buy some pink frosting to go with my pink cupcakes. What… I’m...

Post Holiday Bliss

So I look forward to the holidays for months. I obsess over what the wrapping theme will be, whether I’ll make beef or chicken tamales for 30 on Christmas day, how many more lights can I put up this year… you get the picture. And then December 26th comes and I’m in a mad fury to take down all the decorations, get the fire hazard out of the family room and enjoy a clean quiet house that is not full of people. The day the kids are finally back at school is almost as special as Christmas morning for me. Some people feel a little let down when all the parties and the visiting with friends and relatives end– unless your relatives are super scary or the holiday drunk that says inappropriate things. I have a long list of things to do after the holiday chaos ends but this year I’m going to fit in some things to look forward to: 1. A post-holiday lunch for girlfriends who need to decompress. I’m trying to decide whether the theme will be “Hot food for Hot Broads” or “WTFN?” (Why the F Not?). And naturally there will be a color scheme, I’m thinking hot pink with black and white. 2. A bubble bath and a good book. I’ll light some delicious candles, put a cold drink and maybe some almonds or m&m’s next to the tub and just lay there til the water gets cold. This will happen on a cloudy afternoon (instead of cleaning up dog shit or carpooling kids). My all time favorite candles are Trapp Candles. 3. I’m...
